Southwestern University is an independent, four-year undergraduate, liberal arts and sciences institution. We’re not as old as the Alamo, but Southwestern was the first institution of higher learning in Texas, founded by Methodist missionaries and chartered by the Republic of Texas in 1840. At Southwestern University, you are not simply the passive consumer of current knowledge; you are an active participant in the creation of new knowledge. The Southwestern Experience is designed to develop the intellectual practices necessary to enhance your ability to explore regions of original thought and creative expression. Combining our flexible curriculum, the development of modern ways of thinking, and real-world experience, SU will equip you with the skills required to adapt, create, collaborate, and view challenges from multiple perspectives. These skills represent a valuable piece of a much broader, more relevant education for the tomorrow that awaits you.
Located near Austin, where music, tech, art, and food collide to create a vibrant fusion.
Southwestern University will add a $1,000 Verto-Partner Scholarship to any of the four scholarships we offer transfer students. Students must be enrolled full time to receive scholarships. Merit scholarships can be renewed annually for up to four years.
Southwestern’s interdisciplinary approach to education is designed to develop the intellectual practice of identifying connections between the fundamental questions and ideas that shape our world, empowering students to think in broader, more collaborative, more original ways. Students engage in self-directed connections within all courses, across their major, between disciplines, and in relation to both in- and out-of-classroom experiences, such as community-engaged learning, intercultural learning, internships, faculty-mentored research, advanced language proficiency, and student-directed creative projects.
Majors include:
- Pre-Med/Pre-Health
- Business
- Psychology
- Kinesiology
- Biology
Southwestern University provides multiple contacts and resources for transfer students. We have dedicated staff members assigned to transfer students in our admission & financial aid offices, along with the registrar’s office. We offer an orientation track just for transfer students and assign them to faculty advisors in their majors.
When it comes to financial aid, everyone’s situation is different, and Southwestern takes that into account. We partner with students and their families to navigate the financial aid process and help explore every possible scholarship and financing option available.
Our transfer merit scholarships range from $14,000 to $25,000 per year. We also encourage students to submit the FAFSA for need-based financial aid consideration.
With over 60 registered organizations on campus, there are numerous opportunities for involvement outside the classroom. These organizations represent interests that range from student legislation to social activism, literary publications to Greek Life.
We are a residential campus, which means our on-campus living program is an integral part of the total student experience. We believe, and research has shown, that students who live on campus enjoy greater academic success and are more likely to achieve in other areas such as teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership.
Southwestern’s Office of Study Abroad and International Student Services takes a holistic approach to off-campus study by preparing and supporting students to live and learn in a new culture setting. Exposure to different ideas and perspectives is an integral part of the Southwestern Experience. With hundreds of Study Abroad and International Internship programs available in over 70 countries, it’s not uncommon for students to have multiple study abroad experiences.
