Embark on a life-changing journey in Seville with Spring 2022 student Shaiel Scotte

***This is an example of a student’s experience from Spring 2022. Specific programming and activities are subject to change semester by semester.

I had preconceived notions and movie screen ideas of what Spain would be like. I thought I knew exactly what I would be stepping into, but nothing prepared me for this. The month of February in Connecticut  is  ice cold and gray, and people are constantly trying to avoid the outdoors. However, as I stepped off the plane and felt the sun’s warmth on my skin, I knew that I’d made the right choice coming to Spain. As I walked through the airport doors, and as we drove towards our lovely residency, I took in the view of the city. From the architecture, to the busy streets, I was amazed at the world I was now living in. (Main character moment ;)).

Now, the drive there might have just been 30 minutes, but within that time frame, I flipped through the goals, expectations and emotions I’d have in Spain. In that moment I came to the realization that I would be embarking on a life changing adventure, one with unforgettable moments of beauty and splendor.

It’s only been a full week of me being here in Spain, but within my time here, I realized that one of Spain’s best attributes is it’s beauty. Spain is a country that is rich in gorgeous history, and I was privileged enough to be able to visit an ancient site by the name of Italica that holds Roman ruins including mansions, mosaics and even an amphitheater! If you’re a “Game of Thrones” fan you have to come here! Being able to learn first hand about the art that was created hundreds of years ago and how the lifestyle that was lived impacted the creations that we have unearthed is so amazing. What’s even cooler is knowing there are probably even more Roman ruins under the ground that we walk on everyday!

The architecture in f Spain is what I am really in awe of. A mixture of ancient buildings with modern skyscrapers, it all blends beautifully together. As I walked around exploring, I was truly astonished at what this town has to offer. From Cathedrals to golden towers, this place is certainly a sight you must see!  You know that feeling when you were a kid in a candy or toy shop? There was something exciting in every aisle you turned to, and you just wanted to take the whole store home with you. That is the feeling you get here in Spain. Every corner I turn there is nothing but elegance and artistry, and I feel that same excitement venturing out into this town.

More than physical beauty, there is some type of emotive magic this place holds. A magic that helps you reflect and ponder on all aspects that surround life. Being here, I’ve already reflected so much about who I am, and this place has helped me understand that life is about learning and growing. It’s about meeting new people and embracing differences. It’s about taking chances and getting out of your comfort zone. If this is what I’ve come to understand within one week of being here, I am sure that my three months here will be revelational. I am more than exhilarated to dig deeper into La Belleza de España.
