About University of Southern Maine
The University of Southern Maine (USM), northern New England’s outstanding public, regional, comprehensive university, is dedicated to providing students with a high-quality, accessible, affordable education. Through our undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs, our faculty members educate future leaders in the liberal arts and sciences, engineering and technology, health and social services, education, business, law, and public service. Distinguished for teaching, research, scholarly publication, and creative activity, our faculty are committed to fostering a spirit of critical inquiry and civic participation.
USM embraces academic freedom for students, faculty, and staff, advocates diversity and supports anti-racism efforts in all aspects of our campus life and academic work. We support sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and community involvement. Examples of our commitments are seen through our Strategic Plan Priority of “”Leading on Equity, Race, and Social Justice””; our Fall 2019 University Common Read, Ibram X. Kendi’s “How to be an Antiracist” and supporting Discussion Groups (on-going); our 1st annual Sustainability Progress Report for 2020; our 15-to-finish initiative (began two years ago) which reminds students throughout the year to work closely with their advisors and take 15 credits each academic year (or 30 across Fall, Spring and Summer semesters) to graduate on-time – and the benefits of doing so; our 10 Living Learning Communities (Citizenship, Creativity, Entrepreneurship, First Year Transition, First Generation Student Experience: TRIO & Promise Scholars, Health, Honors, Rainbow Floor, Russell Scholars Program (RSP), and Social Justice); our internships program which ensures internships for every major, our annual Husky Day of Service, and most recently our work with the City of Portland to provide our Sullivan Gym as a housing resource during the Covid-19 pandemic. We have many other examples of daily contributions of our faculty, staff, and students to our communities.
As a center for discovery, scholarship, creativity, and our research center, the Cutler Institute at the Muskie School of Public Service, the University of Southern Maine provides valuable resources for our state and the nation.

The University of Southern Maine is Part of Verto’s Direct Transfer Program
Through Verto’s Direct Transfer Program, you can gain admission to the University of Southern Maine based on your academic performance with the courses delivered by the Academic Provider during your Verto study abroad experience. While admission will depend on the University of Southern Maine’s availability and is ultimately up to their discretion, this route tends to give Verto participants who meet the college’s academic criteria a higher chance of admission and a fast-tracked application.
University of Southern Maine students are engaged learners who thrive in experiential and service-learning opportunities where they can grow, learn and contribute. We are excited to partner with Verto where students are provided a supportive environment and transformational experiences, which prepare them for the critical next steps in their academic career.
